The First Eden The Mediterranean World and Man David Attenborough 9780316057509 Books

If David Attenborough's myriad films and documentaries ever appealed to you, but you would like to go through some at a slower pace and have it on your shelf for future use, then this is a book you will like. It is written for a non-specialist audience and loaded with useful maps and great photographs. Starting with the geology of the Mediterranean---its drying out and refilling several times over millions of years---and continuing on to topics like the pygmy elephants and hippos that lived on islands like Sicily and Malta up to not-so ancient times, the book unfolds both the nature of the region and the history of the peoples who live there. It is certainly done with a broad brush. For academic detail and accuracy you could read Braudel, but this is a well-written introduction to Egypt, Crete, the horse peoples, Islam, the Crusaders, and the destruction of the forests for fuel and construction of houses and ships. He traces the introduction of new plants from the east to the west, as well as from the Americas after Columbus. Attenborough closes on a note of warning, saying that the vast transformation of land and water wrought in this region is now occurring everywhere. Are we going to do anything about it or just let it happen? In this book the Majorcan midwife toad and monk seal were just hanging on in 1987. Thirty years later, they are still in the same situation. Faint hope arises. At least they did not go extinct. What about us?

The First Eden The Mediterranean World and Man David Attenborough 9780316057509 Books Reviews

David Attenborouh does not have an accent, though I can understand that a colonial might think he does. It was a truly great TV series for those interested in history.
This book is a great resource about the history of the Mediterranean. Attenborouh does a good job in telling about the geological as well as human history. He has to lose the accent though. Get it if you get a chance. Only...
Whether or not Sir David has an accent is missing the point (in reference to previous reviews). David Attenborough is one of the most unique individuals and does exemplary performances on his productions no matter if it's a television documentary or publishing a book. He surely is an inspiration to any naturalist, or any person interested in life itself. His passion for the natural world is evident in any of his work and it surely does not fail to guide him in this book, which focuses on the natural history of the Mediterranean. It may be hard to recommend any resource simply assuming its quality based on the reputation of its particual producer or author, but David Attenborough is an exeption.
David Attenborough is, without a doubt, one of the great naturalists of our time. He has brought the natural world to we, the general public, and made it accessible and sensible. The First Eden is the companion book to the series of the same name, and is a natural history of the Mediterranean world and humans. The book is an easy read, well organized, and well illustrated. There are lessons in the book from the past that we should heed well today treat our environment with respect, and it will always provide for you, work with nature and not against it.
Amazingly well done. I just wish they had the it on DVD. I first saw it on PBS many years ago and it was not only educational but it clarifies the subject where textbooks were not able to cover.
