Steampunk! An Anthology of Fantastically Rich and Strange Stories Kelly Link Gavin J Grant Books
Over all, I would say that this has something for everyone, but not everything will be enjoyed by everyone. Whatever is to your liking, you will gravitate more towards some tales than others, but I feel that anyone that enjoys this genre will come away with liking at least half of these stories.Cassandra Clare "Some Fortunate Future Day"
Though short, this is an interesting short story about love and time travel. Kind of a Groundhog Day vibe.
Libba Bray "The Last Ride of the Glory Girls"
This was a ton of fun. I would love to have a series about this group, as I felt that the tale was too short. A female cast for an Edgar Rice Burroughs type tale.
Cory Doctorow "Clockwork Fagin"
Yeah – this is a nice Oliver Twist kid of vibe for me – very cool story.
Ysabeau Wilce "Hand in Glove"
I hated the dialog tags in this one. He Said, She said after EVERY sentence, even if it was a question. The story is not horrible, a bit of a Jack the Ripper feel.
Delia Sherman "The Ghost of Cwmlech Manor"
More ghost story than Steampunk – I did not care for this one – when it ended, it finished abruptly.
Elizabeth Knox "Gesthemane"
Not a very memorable tale at all – the next day, I have forgotten everything about it.
Kelly Link "The Summer People"
This is an interesting tale, though I do not like the ending, as it holds nothing final.
Garth Nix "Peace in Our Time"
Took a few turns unexpectantly, but fell flat by the end.
Christopher Rowe "Nowhere Fast"
This had a great potential, but again, then ending was abrupt and non-absolute.
Dylan Horrocks "Steam Girl"
This was a relief, after I began to think that the rest of the collection would be bad. A modern day tale, with a girl that writes Burroughs-esque fantasy.
Holly Black "Everything Amiable and Obliging"
This is not really a good story. Has a bit of a quirky romance, but nothing contained made me enjoy this short story.
Anderson "The Oracle Engine"
This reads like Di Vinci in the Roman Empire. A new twist to the formula, which was enjoyable, but, the ending was very flat. And the science was a bit heavy handed for a short story.

Steampunk! An Anthology of Fantastically Rich and Strange Stories Kelly Link Gavin J Grant Books Reviews
I don't think I'm a short story reader. By the time I got really into some of the story lines and characters, the story was over.
These stories were pretty good. Some were definitely better than others, but overall I enjoyed the book. On to a regular novel for me!
A lot of short stories, by a lot of authors, most of whom are well-known. Some are fantastic. Several are good. A couple I skipped past after reading just a few paragraphs. Definitely more good than bad, and worth it if you love steampunk.
This is a wonderful collection of stories outside the box. Highly recommend for those that want a quick getaway, without committing to a long term relationship with a book. Though I have to say, I can't wait to read the next story--
great stories
I highly recommend this book of short stories to anyone who enjoys fantasy of science fiction. Most stories told with tongue firmly implanted in cheek, I have just started on another in the Steampunk series and it is equally enjoyable.
A few gems Only one of these stories I couldn't really finish. Comics don't hold up well on the , in my opinion, and the two presented here weren't all that great.
I found most of the stories to be enjoyable -- "good reads".
I'm a newbie to the steampunk sub-genre of science fiction & fantasy, but didn't find the vision of steam-powered, gear-driven "high tech" to be too much of a stretch. I was able to easily "suspend disbelief" and my imagination was engaged.
I thought that the writing was generally excellent, and that's a big part of what makes a believable story. Along with a good story line and good character development, of course. And most of the stories in this anthology seemed to have all of those elements.
After reading this book, I won't hesitate to get another anthology of stories in the steampunk genre.
This is an eclectic and somewhat odd mix of stories. A few of them just barely qualify as "steampunk". Some of them, like "Peace in Our Time", are luddite tales of the destructive potential of technology run amuck. Others, like "Summer People", stray very close into pure fantasy with the technology aspect far more magical than mechanical. One story, however, stands out from the crowd, shining brighter than highly polished brass on a sunny day.
"Steam Girl" is the story of an odd young man who meets an even stranger young woman. Both of them are social outcasts, she even more than he, and he finds himself fascinated by her leather pilot's helmet, her complete lack of concern for the opinions of others, and the notebook filled with pictures and diagrams she carries everywhere she goes. Once the awkward introductions are passed, they begin meeting regularly for lunch near the school trash incinerator where she regales him with stories of "Steam Girl", the daughter of a brave adventurer, their space ship the "Martian Rose", and their series of remarkable adventures on Mars and Venus. Her story lives within the broader story and buried within her story is yet another layer of narrative that does not become apparent until the very surprising end.
"Steam Girl" is the reason I gave this collection four stars instead of three. While the writing is as good as any other modern writing, none of the other tales in this collection approach the character depth, layered metaphors, and surprising creativity of "Steam Girl". This story would be worth $2.99 all on its own, leaving the rest of book as a mostly pleasant and sometimes odd bonus.
Over all, I would say that this has something for everyone, but not everything will be enjoyed by everyone. Whatever is to your liking, you will gravitate more towards some tales than others, but I feel that anyone that enjoys this genre will come away with liking at least half of these stories.
