Legacy of the Clockwork Key The Secret Order Kristin Bailey Books
I was actually very surprised at the not-so-good reviews this book received because I thought it was great! I read some reviews on Goodreads prior to buying it, and one of the main complaints is that it isn't steampunk enough. With that, I must agree. I feel that if this is going to be marketed as a steampunk novel, there needs to be steampunk involved. There needs to be mentions of the bizarre fashions, automatons, steam-powered inventions, and such. The only real mention of steampunk was in the Order's inventions, but that just isn't enough. So, I went into reading this novel with an open mind, and not expecting steampunk. I was pleasantly surprised though at how much I enjoyed it. I thought I might be let down because one of the main reasons I wanted this book to begin with was because I am a steampunk fanatic, but what I found was a fantastically crafted world, and a novel that took the reader on an exciting and breath-taking adventure from beginning to end.The story was extremely intriguing. I was constantly on the edge of my seat, waiting to discover what part of the puzzle the group was going to find next. Ms. Bailey's writing was great in my opinion. There were plenty of funny lines, and cute, romantic moments. I didn't like the "insta-love" aspect of it, but I was cheering on Meg and Will. I will say that Meg's doubts were slightly annoying at times, but it wasn't anything major. To me, it's just like the doubts any girl has when they meet a guy. The adventure was heart-stopping and action-packed. Ms. Bailey incorporated different aspects of myths and legends, and blended them together to create a fabulous adventure and story. I couldn't wait to see how the story ended.
The ending was just as action-packed as the rest of the adventure, and I can't wait to see where the sequel will take us. I'm can't wait to read what Ms. Bailey has in store for us readers because I'm sure it will be just as good! Like I said, don't go into this novel expecting steampunk because you will be sorely disappointed. However, if you put that aspect out of your mind, I'm sure you'll enjoy the story!

Legacy of the Clockwork Key The Secret Order Kristin Bailey Books Reviews
Where do I start? I love the "steampunk-esque" feel of this story. Meg's courage and determination to get what she wants is rather refreshing. The decision she had to make in the end, albeit a difficult one, shows that even though she could've changed her story, she chose the love she had found.
Margaret Whitlock's parents have been dead six months. As she works as a maid in an eccentric man's house, her only link to her parents is a silver pocket watch she found in the ashes of her former home. When Meg takes the watch to the household groom, a young man named Will who has a tragic past,to see if he can fix it, they unwittingly unearth a deadly secret, in which Meg plays a key part. For she is the key.
And so begins an absolutely stunning book full of adventure, romance, intrigue, secret societies and amazing mechanical inventions.
What I loved Pretty much everything. The detail though, is incredible. It's not tedious and it doesn't feel like your being told what's happening. It's more like your being shown and then left to form your own conclusions. I was very impressed with the detailed descriptions with which Kristin Bailey portrays the machines. She has an insanely good imagination to be able to put so much detail into them and not have it seam boring. I also loved the light romance between Will and Meg. It was sweet and very refreshing since it wasn't all lust, sex, lust, sex, like you usually find in young adult fiction. I also loved the cast of characters. They all had interesting pasts and none of them were cookie-cutter characters. I especially loved Lucinda. Her grief is so real, I really felt for her.
What I didn't love Meg and Will instantly fall in love. That whole aspect just didn't work for me. And Will's character, though I loved him, wasn't as developed as it could have been. His back story has such great potential that I felt wasn't used. Also his personality is contradicting, which was a bit annoying. Meg could be a bit whiney too. One reviewer said she was selfish. I didn't see that but that's just my opinion.
My final thoughts are I loved it!You know a book is good when you finish it and immediately want to read it again! This was the first steampunk book I've read and I can definitely say it won't be the last! The writing, the plot, everything was great. There were minor flaws but every book has those and considering this is Bailey's first book, it was crazy good! It is the begining of a series so it kind of leaves you hanging, but in a good way. And yes I would absolutely recommend others to read it!
I'm not all that familiar with the steampunk genre but I really enjoyed this book and I think it is a good beginning for a promising series. I do think this a good book for readers looking to get into this genre. It is not too technical with mechanical details for the reader to get lost in.
The Cons
~One problem I had with the story, was that there were some inventions that did just not seem possible using steam and clockwork technology. A couple of the 'amusements' were like modern technology. Since I enjoy science fiction I just assumed that were ways to make it possible and I hope that in the next books, the author will explain how some of the inventions work a little better.
~At times, the plot was a little slow. So while I was enjoying the read, it took me a little longer to finish the book because I didn't always get hooked on the story.
The Pros for me
~Based in historical England!
~The inventions were pretty cool! I really liked how some of the inventions were based on mythology.
~I enjoyed the 2 main characters, Meg and Will and their relationship. Some reviewers wrote that they disliked protagonist, Meg but I think you need to keep in mind that she is a young girl in historical England whom just lost her family. She is thrown into a world of secret societies and murderers and she must find a place in this new world.
