Animal Cracker Andi Brown Books
Animal CrackerAnimal Crackers is light and fun but also has a few surprises. It was so good that I couldn't put it down. Anyone who has ever worked for a small company knows how dead on each of the characters at the animal shelter organization is. And the director is everyone's worst boss who thinks he IS the organization but doesn't mind letting other people do the work for which he will take credit. The main character Diane is young and idealistic but she can see that the real world doesn't work the way she hoped did. I liked her and her office mates so much that I would love to read another book about them.

Animal Cracker Andi Brown Books Reviews
Good story line. Little bit of a mystery to keep me wanting to read. Sometimes books that have a snooping lead character that stupidly gets into crazy situations really irritate me, but I wasn't irritated with this book. There were a few questionable plot twists that seemed implausible but overall the story was good-hearted. I did not care for the ending with a highly unlikely event that seemed thrown in just to nicely wrap up Diane's future, described in a single paragraph. I won't say it specifically because I don't like spoilers unless necessary for my review. I'm a big animal rescue fan and this book was a topic I enjoyed.
Andi Brown's book Animal Cracker is not only hilarious, but the plot is cleverly crafted around believable characters who work in an animal shelter. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down. I found myself laughing out loud through the plot's twists and turns, and would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys great dialogue and three dimensional characters.
This was a good read! Protagonist Diane begins working for an animal advocacy foundation that operates a number of shelters. An animal lover herself, she's out to do what she can to make life easier for the non-humans around her. It soon hits her that despite her boss' rhetoric, something about him is wrong ... and it just might be a lifestyle that his salary could not possibly cover. Diane, with some help from her journalist roommate, investigates.
The characters in this novel are wonderful. The board members supervising the foundation are drawn with an acid pen, albeit realistically I'm afraid. Diane's co-workers are well-rounded and delightful. Her boss, Hal, gets the same acid pen as the board members, deservedly so.
The excellent characters carried the novel, but a slightly faster-moving plot would have been appreciated.
Any animal lover will find resonance with an organization dedicated to placing mistreated pets into loving homes-- in spite of the charismatic stuffed shirt in charge. After a tediously slow start, Animal Cracker turned out to be an interesting four star yarn. A board of directors is insufficient oversight when under the spell of professional con-artist. But evil will out-- and justice will triumph-- sometimes through a circuitous path of suspense.
Unfortunately, I had to dock the book from four to three stars-- for the occasional lapse of editing and proofreading. Typos and awkward sentence structure, or just the wrong word, trip the reader and interrupt the flow of the narrative. These should have been corrected before the manuscript went to print (or e-book).
It's still a good read, but the slow start and the editing could have been so much better.
Diane just got her dream job working for the premiere local humane society, after being dumped unexpectedly by the man she thought she'd marry. Her boss is a vain Brad Pitt look alike, who's very good at schmoozing rich donors but does very little actual work and takes all the credit for what everyone else does. He's also very obviously embezzling, but it takes a while for Diane to figure that out. Her best friend is a journalist looking for her big break, so they team up to take him down. There's some very funny stuff, as well as some very poignant stuff; it's dealing with animal shelters after all. I wanted to like this book more than I did. It needed some copy editing, I found everyone's kowtowing to the narcissistic boss hard to believe, Diane had a really ill advised rebound relationship, and the under cover French farce was a little too much. Diane has some cool realizations about herself at the end, and the bad guy gets his just deserts, so it ends well.
As an avid reader and animal rescue supporter, I really enjoyed this book!! There are too many well-known animal rescue organizations, some who have heartbreaking ads on TV, who use almost none of the donations for the animals. PLEASE research before you donate. The best and safest thing to do is to donate to your local shelters. You can go there to see what they do and how they care for the animals. Support animal rescue groups instead of puppy mills who over breed, overcrowd, mistreat animals for profit. God's creature deserve our very best everything. -|😘
Delightful, charming, suspenseful. Diane works for a well-respected animal sanctuary, but the longer she works there, the less things add up. Her boss, supposedly the animal lover to end all animal lovers, shows absolutely no interest in a shelter she finds across town that is an utter wreck, with animals on the brink of death. He's more interested in receiving accolades. When he starts missing important fund-raising events, she decides she has to find out what is going on.
The further into the book you go, the faster things happen. She concocts a daring research adventure with her journalist roommate that can have disastrous consequences in any thing goes wrong, and left me riveted to the page.
The reason it's 4 stars instead of 5 is that the author has an interesting take on paragraphs, occasionally putting them in where it isn't necessary, which sometimes makes it confusing who is talking. Is it the person who was just speaking? Or have we changed speakers? She also sometimes forgets quote marks where they are needed, and they show up where they are not. Despite this, it is a delightful book.
