I lived in Qubec for two years in the 1980s and never really understood the seperation of the two cultures, French Canadian and English Canadian, until then. The French Canadians have a very strong tie to their heritage and language, more so than the multi-cultural rest of Canada. Two Solitudes brings this knowledge to the readers in a concise fashion and will greatly help them in understanding the differences between the two cultures that has created the barricade that, unfortunately, still exists. It is a must read for all Canadians.Tags : Two Solitudes [Hugh MacLennan] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.,Hugh MacLennan,Two Solitudes,New Canadian Library,0771034822,VI-0771034822

Considering Canada's tentative relation with Quebec, one should consider reading this book to better understand the underlying perceptions that remain part of our English/French relationships. One of the most relevant books on the market today despite it being written in the 1940's. I encourage fellow Canadians to get a better understanding of one another.
Ok
I read this in preparation for a trip to Montreal and Quebec City knowing little about Canadian history. I felt it gave me great insight into the duality of Canada. The novel is rich in themes, and the story captured and held my attention. I truly enjoyed reading this book!
So much that we citizens of the USA do not know about the nation on our northern border is put before us in this outstanding piece of literature. You know that Quebec has an element desiring independence, but how much more do you know. Read this and gain understanding.
This is a very entertaining quick read that gives you a peek into the minds and souls of the Quebecois under the thrall of the Catholic church set on maintaining a mediaeval society, and the English Canadian business elite in Montreal running their economy like a foreign occupier. You get a poignant sense of the beauty of the people and their tragic circumstance. If you are an English Canadian boomer like me and wonder what led to the quiet revolution, this is course 101.
Almost done reading this on . So far this book has been a joy to read. I'm a huge fan of anything dealing with North American history, and the way that Maclennan details his characters you really feel like you're walking the streets of Pre-WW2 Montreal and rubbing elbows with them. Also really enjoyed his descriptions of Nova Scotia, which you can tell were really well-colored by personal experience. Highly recommend this book as a good read in general, but also a fascinating snapshot of a turning point in Canadian history.
A founding classic of Canadian Lit, this book encapsulates so much more than I could understand about the fabric that makes up the French/English, Male/Female, and Old/Young divide. The tale spans two generations during the early 20th century in Canada, touching upon WWI, the Great Depression, and WWII. The portrait of McQueen, a self-made industrialist who wants to be accepted into high society, is especially interesting.
