This book is distressingly accurate, and thus not a "happy dance," but it shows a way out. I would buy it again for any woman who is struggling with her Christian faith; it provides the reader with a clear, focused history regarding why women are not first class citizens.

The Gospel According to Woman Christianity Creation of the Sex War in the West Karen Armstrong 9780385240796 Books Reviews

A brilliant study of how formal christianity has not only marginalized women, but criminalized them. A unique look at Church history and practice and what it meant for women. Highly recommend.
a great read. Very insightful; synthesizes so much material.
This was an incredible book, packed with history. I learned a lot
It is a well researched and documented history and analysis of Christianity's dehumanization & savage treatment of women and human sexuality. I've read it several times as it has helped me understand the 'pro-life' movement and place that movement it it's proper historical context.
Essential for understanding the history of sexism, mysogyny and so many other problems in our culture
this book should be required reading in high school and again in college

Wonderfully written, with amazing information Karen Armstrong has an amazing knowledge of history

Be sure to take notes and come back to them on occasion
I am male, so this is a communication from a member of an alien species!

I think from her own personal history, Karen Armstrong, at the time of writing this book, was still coming to terms with a great deal of rage, a significant portion of which is connected to her earlier history. A strength is the contrast between women in the early Church and their rapid descent into servile status shortly thereafter. There is no question that women have gotten a raw deal from the Church. A weakness is Armstrong's failure to understand the Church as a reflection of the attitudes and beliefs/values of its members. The Church denigrating and persecuting women draws its membership from a society that denigrated and persecuted women. Armstrong, I feel, passes over the significance and importance of both the movement to interpret Sophia (Wisdom) as the Holy Spirit, expressing the feminine aspect of the Godhead, and the whole constellation of issues around Wicca and the Godess (as opposed to wanna-be witches.)
Karen Armstrong is one of my favorite authors and this book did not disappoint. Always did wonder why Christianity was so harsh on women and so hung up on sex, like it was the unpardonable sin or something. Well, it's not. This book certainly supplied answers to long standing questions I've had about my Christian faith. A good read.
This book is distressingly accurate, and thus not a "happy dance," but it shows a way out. I would buy it again for any woman who is struggling with her Christian faith; it provides the reader with a clear, focused history regarding why women are not first class citizens.
